Surprising places in the bush

Today I went to Maldon, riding on a very leisurely train.  I've been there a few times in the past, but only ever visiting relatives who have long since moved on from the town so hadn't really seen the whole place.  Today I had the opportunity to walk around and see the town more extensively.

What surprised me most was turning around as I walked out of the station, only to see the facade of Clifton Hill looking back at me, complete with quatrefoil above the entrance.

Out and about on Sunday

This week I'll be playing at All Saints, Northcote, again.  This week they're keeping the variously-titled feast of 2 February, known as Candlemass, or Presentation, or Purification (take your pick).

The main moments where the organ features in the service are the prelude, communion, and postlude.  Here's what I have planned for this week.

Ciacona [BuxWV 160] -- Dietrich Buxtehude
Herr Christ der einig Gottes Sohn -- J.P. Sweelinck
Toccata -- Georg Muffat

Cathedral Voluntary 1 -- A.E. Floyd

A.E. Floyd was organist at St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, from 1914 until 1947.  He later became an important and much-loved figure in music broadcasting through his hosting of The Music Lovers' Hour on ABC radio.

Floyd published a few organ pieces, mostly reflecting his preoccupation with S.S. Wesley and the English cathedral tradition.  Over the years I've accumulated almost everything in original editions, which were put out through the Salvation Army Printery.  A new edition of his organ music was produced by Kevin Mayhew in 1997, although it seems to be out of print now.

Almost every Australian organist of middling ability has something by Floyd in the backpack.  It's well-crafted gebrauchsmusik that is pleasing to the ear and not too hard on the player, and you can get away with it almost anywhere.  This performance was recorded on a single manual instrument with no swell box and no useful registration aids.

Something for Australia Day

Here's a spot of Percy Grainger for today.  Click the title below to hear the piece.

Out and about on Sunday

This week I'll be playing at All Saints, Northcote.  This is a lovely little church with a very warm and welcoming congregation, where I've previously played for the odd funeral and wedding.  It'll be interesting seeing the place in action on a Sunday morning from the dizzying heights of the organ gallery, which is approached via a very precipitous staircase.  Definitely not one of those places you'd want to be stumbling around in the dark.

It's Australia day weekend, so the pieces I've got planned for the service are as follows.  See if you can spot the theme...

Voluntary -- A.E. Floyd
Chorale -- Alan Tregaskis
March -- Percy Grainger

Enjoying the quiet

I'm not out and about on Sundays much at the moment.  It's nice to disappear into the congregation and see what it's like on the other side of the gallery rail sometimes, and this is about the right time to be doing just that.

I thought I'd re-share something from a couple of months ago: click here to listen.

Umm...

How many arguments about church music could be avoided if we only played Bach on an electric guitar?

The Trumpet's Loud Clangour

In three months from today I will be playing a recital at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo.  The concert will start at 3.00pm on Sunday 3 March.

The event is part of a series of concerts at the Cathedral being arranged through the Early Arts Guild of Victoria.  The program will feature music for organ and trumpet, with Matthew Schultz.

This is the first in the inaugural series of concerts to honour the memory of Fr Ivan Page, who died shortly after all the details of an autumn concert series had been settled.

Booking info isn't yet available, but I'm sure the Early Arts Guild would welcome some early inquiries.

I'll post more information about the programme as time comes closer.
