The Index

One of the perplexing things about the immense quantity of organ music on the internet is that there are no reliable indicators of difficulty.  This can serve to discourage new players from sourcing scores on the web, so this page is part of a long-term project to create a list of music surveying a range of styles, indexed for difficulty.  The categories will be fairly self-evident, and I will aim to provide links directly through to the files for scores.

My main aim is to provide a ready guide for people with limited technique, and to provide some pathways for further exploration.

I've drawn on a couple of preexisting indexes to help start this page off, particularly the contents of several C.H. Trevor books, which have informed some of the material listed in the first index at the top of this page.  Also, my own experience of most of the music listed here informs my choice for classification.  While I would be reluctant to advocate this index as an outline for a course of study, I suppose one could do worse.  If you are a pianist making the transition to the organ, you are the main people I have in mind here.  I hope this will be useful to you, and help you to develop your skills.

The second index is extracted from Flor Peeters's Ars Organi, and I am providing links to scores available on the web in this list.  This is an outline for further study, and I am including it here to make the contents more accessible to those who'd like an extra challenge.

As an evolving project, I hope this page will be worth your visiting from time to time.  Please feel free to contact me if you have suggestions for more repertoire to link to this page.

Plan of Study in Organ Literature

Extracted from: Flor Peeters, Ars Organi, vol 3, 5th Ed. (Brussels: Shott Freres, 1954), 94-95.

This plan of study can naturally by modified, according to the aptitude and talent of the young roganist.  In this matter the teacher must give proof of pedagogical insight, as every pupil is a special case in himself.

The works mentioned are divided into four different grades of difficulty, corresponding to a four years' course of study.

While a wide course of systematic study is provided [in the preceeding volumes of Ars Organi], the student is not necessarily expected to cover the complete list of works assigned to each year.
